Across the world, authoritarian governments are extending their reach beyond their borders — stalking, threatening, and silencing people who fled to safety. From Uyghur activists in the U.S. being harassed by Chinese state agents, to Russian, Iranian, and Burmese dissidents facing intimidation and surveillance, transnational repression is a growing threat to human rights and democracy everywhere.
These regimes are trying to make sure that no one can speak freely about injustice. The United States must not be a safe haven for authoritarian intimidation.
We’re calling on Congress to pass the Transnational Repression Policy Act, bipartisan bills in the House (H.R. 4829) and the Senate (S. 2525) that would, for the first time, create a comprehensive U.S. government strategy to expose, deter, and hold accountable foreign governments that target diaspora and exile communities.
As much as we wish is wasn’t so, genocides are happening all around us. In Myanmar, the Rohingya are being persecuted. In China, the Uyghurs are being forced into slave labor camps and subjected to horrors and death. The Sudan civil war has escalated to genocide. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the killings continue. Armenians who had lived peacefully in Azerbaijan for generations have been forced out and their coummunities erased. We need your help to stop these atrocties.
